New Tech and Product

Jeudi 20 juillet 2006

How to continue being creative in New Designs when you are  Making Consumer  or High Tech product?

Some of commonly branded companies have understood that the collaborative way might be the best  to achieve both customer attraction and innovations.

My 15 years experience with Nokia is that  from the very early stage of the company , as part of customer intimacy, Club Nokia were created to have customers sharing their ideas.

For Geeks also Nokia opened Tech platforms giving Engineers the opportunity to participate to new development and software enhancements. This was done on the Symbian Soft used on Nokia.

As an example of this practice, Nokia organizes Design contest, last year it took place in Belgium . To incentive a large number of participants, winners are getting opportunity to win latest Nokia Phones. The winner of 2005 is a Turkish Designer and his proposal was the clever Wrist-Tie Phone name Nokia 888 (see picture)

Year before Nokia release the Lipstick type phone for Women , model 7280

Let’s Guess that we may very soon wear this new Band-Wrist Phones and Nokia enjoy further success avoiding large R/D and Design expenditure.

So the Mobile Phone is definitly a fashion accessory today,  will soon be part of Milan, Paris or New York Haute Couture Fashion scene with bags and jewels.

Smart Marketing Communication , Clever Customer Intimacy, Bright Financial Approach.

RFID  is a means of identifying a person or object using a radio frequency transmission.

How it works :

You put a Tag (or electronic label) composed of a Miniature Radio Antenna and a Chip on a person or object .When this tag approach a reader up to 10 meters even at a speed of 100k/H , it sends its information by Radio Frequence, which can be read on a Computer

It has been extensively used in applications such as toll collection, access control, ticketing, and car immobilization devices .

Some examples of use in France: Navigo replacing  la Carte Orange from RATP , Telepeage System  Liber-T on Motorways.

Logistics companies are using it more and more frequently as well as the health and pharmacy industry, Indentity Control ( ID , Pasports), Food Industry (to ensure the origin and tracability of what you eat).. Luxury Industry (Perfums, Bags , Clothes start marking their products to stop  fakes )

The tags that were originally too expensive to be used  widely , are now  decreasing in price . More and more companies are looking at it.

Very soon you will go at your supermarket and will not need to queue at the cashier, all your articles will be  read at once  in a second .

What about RFID on people?

A company Allied Digital Solutions has developped a tag that can be directly intsalled under your Skin. the American FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has validated this product , already in use on animals and some american hospital would already  have ordered the system for their patients. The tag has a size of a rice grain.

A Disco in Barcelona the Baja Beach Club has proposed and tested implants on volunteer clients.

So are you ready to be Tagged ??? Look at 33 Amazing RFID applications on:

3motion of California has just launched a new futurist electrical vehicle ,

This 3 wheel stand up  is environment friendly , for use in high density area . Powered by electrical batteries it has  a speed of 40 km/h and an autonomy of 45 km. It costs around 6000 US$

An other company ,Segway did already developped their famous 2 wheels vehicle for patrolling city streets, airport concourses or parks and trails. Hundreds of police depts already use the Segway trough the US, as well as security perdonnel  in a hundred of Airports so far. The speed is 20 km/H and the operating range is 38 km.  To move forward or backward on the Segway PT, the rider just leans slightly forward or backward. To turn left or right, the rider simply moves the LeanSteer frame left or right.

Bad guys will have to run faster...

Did an aircraft lost its engine ?

We will need to rethink how  a windmill looks like in the near future . Aerodynamics is at full potential

Forget the big propellers and get use to see "jet engine" floating in our windy country areas.

A bench of benefits:

This new windmill called  Stormblade Turbine, designed by  par Victor Jovanovic,is much more efficient than current designs an can operate for wind speeds ranging from 11 to 193 km/h  (7mph to >120mph) .An efficiency of conversion of wind into electricity of 70 % versus 40 %.

The generated power is also much higher compared the size of the blades. The noise much lower, the cost too.

Five years backwards I visited the windmill fields of Palm Springs in California, , an impressive alignment of thousands windmills.

lets now figure out how the turbine would fit the landscape.

This Turbine represents a major step forward in the clean green energy, both in the design and the technology. It shoulb be industrialized by the end of 2007

anyway my favourite design definitly keeps this                                 traditional ones,

a real flavour from Holland and Greece

Happy Wind !!!

At a time where  electronics and technology are entering our day to day life at home, an other alternative using "bio-technologies" propose the home of the future.

Mitchell Joachim, Lara Greden and  Javier Arbona-Homar (a former group from MIT)have conceived a home that doesn't just use "green" design but is itself a living ecosystem.

The concept is the use of  young trees growing  together into a shape that would sustain the foundation of the home.

The gaps could be filled in with soil and growing plants to create small  gardens.

On the interior walls, a mixture of clay that would provide insulation and block moisture.

On south-facing walls, windows made of organic  plastics would absorb warmth in the winter; ground-floor windows on the shady side could draw in cool breezes during hot months.

Water collected on the roof would flow through the house for use by people and plants; waste water would be purified in an outdoor pond with bacteria, fish, and plants that consume organic waste.

This project is aiming primarily sub tropical areas , but the first stage of using eco systems in design of our home is a close reality.

An atlernative proposal is mixing modern material with ecological and living areas.
In area London, a successful example of Eco house are already built .The London scheme will involve at least 1,000 homes, which will be powered entirely by renewable energy sources such as photovoltaic panels, wind turbines and the burning of waste.

 The stratospheric Vehicle

you know what is a satellite, but do you know what is a STRATELLITE

A Trade Mark from SANSWIRE company an airship and communications technology manufacturer .

 What is a Stratellite?

It is a 75m long high tech air vehicle (balloon type) designed to fly in the stratosphere , 21 km above earth , and to manage communications (broadband, mobile phones..) in a area of 770 000 sq km. It is robot piloted, and powered by solar cells.

Stratellite has an autonomy of 18 months. The first exemplary is to be launched over Lima , Peru and will handle all communications such as Voice , VoIP, video, and WIFI services.

Sanswire plan to manufacture hundreds to thousands of those "flying wales " that will populate our sky, primarily the states of South America, at a much lower cost than satellites (only 10 %).

Except Telecommunications the stratellite can respond a very large scheme of applications like security ,environment or defense missions.

Your cell phones will tell You Everything

New Intelligent functions are invading our Phones

Geovector
is developping  New applications around mobility devices and  intelligent functions for Mobile Phones.

The company  software permits to  create 3 D images from a  mobile phone picture  ,search on internet and  indicates details,  directions or location of buildings, shops , restaurants , services...
In addition to the softare, a GPS Chip and a Compass are installed on the
Phone.

Image Copyright © 2004 GeoVector

Select "Parking"  and it will display all parking places around and give you direction in 3 D - Select "Bakery " and get ready to bring back "the french Baguette " back home tonight.

other intersting feature is Pointing :
You walk in the street, point a building, a location ,  and it gives you  related information. For instance  point a Cinema with you phone , and it will display all the sessions, and even allow you to book a seat and buy a ticket on line.
Let s imagine you go for a Football match, you simply Point a player during the match, it will tell you his name, position,  records...or you watch americas Cup , it shows you detailed on the Sailboat, Teams, Position in the race...

see demonstrations on Geovector site here

The devices help you  to find out about the real world objects around you . The benefit over  conventional GPS , is that it  can also tell you about what you're looking at.

The product is already in use in Japan, where Geovector  partner with NEC group and Network operator (KKDI).

On his side Nokia reseach Center at Helsinki Finland is working on a quite similar project called MARA (The Mobile Augmented Reality Applications)

A new type of  hotel resort will start populating our oceans in the near futur : the Underwater Hotels

Once again Jules Vernes vision comes true

The first 220-suite hotel , Hydropolis  is due to open in Dubai at the end of 2007. Currently under construction (it started in 2005) Hydropolis is the world's first luxury underwater hotel.
A vast  land station welcome guests , a tunnel Hall transport people by train to the main area of the hotel, and the 220
bubble-shaped suites in a submarine leisure area. Each room will have bathtub and clear glass.

Guest will sleep with the fishes 20m below the surface of the Arabian Gulf. Two translucent domes will house a concert auditorium and a ballroom that break the water s surface,  three bars, a cosmetic surgery clinic, a marine biology research institute, a library, a museum, prayer rooms, a private cinema, a retail area selling ocean-related wares, and three 150-seat restaurants.

The investement is
Euros 550 million worth. It will  benefit construction technologies employed in submarines and offshore platforms. It is supported by the Dubai Development and Investment Authority.

Next to come Hydropalace will be near Quingdao in China.I is expected to be ready for the Olympic Games.

But numerous projects now take place. Monaco in Europe could be one location.

In Fidji Islands, at a smlaller scale the Poseidon  project  features  a 5 stars Hotel, with 20 suites of 51 M², and 2 larger ones.
Opening in December 2007

French Sea Explorer and film maker
Commandant Jacques Yves Cousteau who made millions people discover the beauty of the oceans would be amazed to see this.

Do  you book a room ?

Very certainly you remember Walt Disney movies Merlin the magician where objects lift up and float in the room.

Dutch architect Anjaap Ruijssenaars from Universe Architecture has made it in collaboration with Bakker Magnetics : A floating Bed.

This project started in 1999 and a prototype was presented in 2006 for a price of not less than 1,2 Million Euros

A permanent magnetic force is created due to the use of neodymium in the floor and the bedframe.

The matching set of repelling magnets permit the bed to  be held 40 cm above the ground.

Wires assure a fixed  position.

The bed can support a 900 Kg load . Others objects such as Sofas, Tables can be designed with the same technology.

Takamichi Nakamoto from Tokyo Institute of Technology has invented a a device that can detect, record, digitize and then replicate any smell.

The 15 sensors of the machine analyze scents, record a recipe and convert  in digital format that can be used to store libraries of smell. It then can be reproduced  by mixing 96 chemical formulas.

Shopping for flowers online, or transmitting a smell trough a cell phone and sending it digitally to a receiver somewhere else in the world, watching a movie with recreating smells orf the environment, are some of the multiple application for the device.

Primarily the fragrance and flavour industries are the first showing interest in the technology.
